Creating links in a Wiki page

One of the more important skills to learn for wiki page development is creating links. There are primarily two different links to be concerned about internal links and external links.

Internal links

Internal link are links that reference other wiki pages within your site. While you can reference the pages as an external link, it is best to use the internal link method if you need to reorganize your site.

Format of the link

An internal link takes this form, [[Informal Learning:Wiki-Editing_text_in_a_Wiki_page|Editing text in a Wiki page]]

  • The first part is the link to the page and the second part is the text that appears on your page.
  • The link "Wiki-Editing_text_in_a_Wiki_page" cannot have an spaces or punctuation other than hyphens ("-") and underscores ("_").
  • A pipe ("|") separates both parts.
  • The very first part "Informal Learning:" is called a namespace and help organize the wiki.
  • The entire link must be wrapped with double brackets "[[" and "]]".

If the link goes to a page that does not exist, you can then add new content using the Creating a new Wiki page procedures. Otherwise, the link will go to an existing page.

Finding existing pages

There are many ways to find if a page exists so that you can link to it. Here are two methods that are quite reliable:

Search - If you think you know something about the page, you can conduct a search for the page.

Special pages: All pages - On the Toolbox section of the menu, there is a link to Special pages. When you click on this link you will have many other options. Select the option called All pages under Lists of pages. This is a list of all the pages in the wiki.

To capture the link, simply copy and paste everything after the equal sign on the URL. Here is and example:

http://www.wyomingextension.org/wiki/index.php5?title=Informal_Learning:Wiki-Creating_a_new_Wiki_page You would copy the bold section.

External Links

External links are links to Web pages outside of your Wiki site.

Format of the link

An External link takes this form, [http://www.uwyo.edu/cessupport/ University of Wyoming Extension]

  • The first part is the link to the page and the second part is the text that appears on your page.
  • The link cannot have an spaces.
  • A space (" ") separates both parts.
  • The entire link must be wrapped with single brackets "[" and "]".

Unique External Links

When you connect to external links such PDF documents, images, audio or video files, or a email address, the image next to link will uniquely identify the link.

  • Here is an example of an email link: [mailto:skrabut@uwyo.edu Stan Skrabut], e.g., Stan Skrabut
