Setting Ask an Expert question preferences

The questions that you receive from the 'Ask an Expert system are dependent upon the settings you have in your AaE preferences. There are five sections in the preference area: General, Locations, Tags, Answering, and Groups. These settings control the questions you will receive. These settings can always be changed.

General Settings

The General settings allows you to update your description which is displayed on your Expert and Public Profile, your public profile name, and your avatar.

Here are the steps for updating your General settings:

  1. Go to https://ask.extension.org/expert/home
  2. Select the My settings from the drop down menu in the upper right corner.
  3. Select General link, if you are not already taken there.
  • Update the following preferences based on your desires:
    • About Me description
    • Public Name
    • Profile Avatar

4. Once complete, Click on the Save Changes button.

Locations

Under Locations, you can select the areas where you believe you can provide the most assistance. Locations are used for automated assignments.

To manage your preferences in this area, follow these steps:

1. Begin by selecting the Locations link from the settings pages.

2. Click on Add a Location drop down menu.

3. Select a location from the dropdown provided.

4. You must either select the All counties button or Pick counties button.

5. Continue to add states or counties.

Tags

Under the Tags, you can select the areas where you believe you can provide the most assistance. Your tags tell others what kind of questions you want to answer. Specifically, tags are used to make matches when reassigning questions.

To manage your tags, begin by selecting the Tags link from the settings pages. Once on the Tags page, simply enter a desired tag in the field provided. While typing in your tag, you may see a list of tags related to your tag. If possible, choose one from the list; this means other people are already using the tag. If you do not see your tag listed, feel free to add it. Ensure that you want your spelling.

Answering

The Answering section allow you to define how you are assigned questions. You can also set your vacation status and response email signature.

1. Begin by selecting the Answering link from the settings pages.

2. If you are on vacation, check the checkbox next to Mark me as away. No questions will be sent you way at this time.

3. Decide if you wish to automatically have questions assigned to you from your groups by checking the appropriate box. Once the box has been checked, select whether you want to receive questions fro anywhere, only from your states, or only from your counties. These are identified in the Locations settings.

4. Update your email signature block. This signature block is added to your response to questions, and can be edited on a per-response basis.

5. Finally, click on the Save Changes button anytime you make changes to these settings.

Groups

The final setting focuses on groups. Groups can be set up by anyone for any reason. There are three important areas to address with groups: handling group questions, joining groups, and leaving groups. Questions can be reassigned not only to individuals but to also groups.

Handling group questions settings

To manage your settings in this area, follow these steps:

1. Begin by selecting the Groups link from the settings pages.

2. For each group, decide if you want to receive notifications every time the group gets a new question as well as if you want to be sent a daily summary. You can do this by checking the appropriate boxes.

3. For each group, click on the Save button after making updates.

Joining Groups

In order to join a group, you must first find it. Here are the steps to find and join a group:

1. Go to https://ask.extension.org/expert/home.

2. Either click on the Groups link at the top of the page or enter a search term in the search field provided..

3. Click on a name of a group that you wish to leave.

4. Click on the Join Group button.

Creating Groups

If you can not find the right group to join, you can always create your own group. Here are the steps:

1. Go to https://ask.extension.org/expert/home.

2. Click on the Groups link at the top of the page.

3. Click on the Create a new group button.

4. Enter a Group Name and Group Description in the fields provided.

5. Click on the Create Group button.

Leaving Groups

Leaving a group is very easy. Here are the steps:

1. Go to https://ask.extension.org/expert/home.

2. Click on the Groups link at the top of the page.

3. Click on a name of a group that you wish to leave.

4. Click on the Leave Group button.
