New extension bulletin explains why price slide important marketing factor

            Why price slides at livestock markets and in forward price contracts are important when making production and marketing decisions is explained in a new publication from the University of Wyoming Extension.

Price slide is the naturally occurring phenomenon that cattle prices tend to decrease as an animal’s weight increases.

If making operational changes to increase weaning weights – for example, buying more expensive bulls or shifting calving dates – understanding how that decision affects calf values, not just weights, can be important, stated the authors. Understanding how price slide affects forward contracts can help producers decide whether or not to deliver calves that are under or over the agreed-upon weight.

Evanston hosting second-annual Wyoming-Utah Ag Days

Topics ranging from the cattle market outlook to sage grouse and deworming sheep are among topics at Wyoming-Utah Ag Days Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 23-24, in Evanston.

Sessions are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each day at the Evanston Roundhouse, 1500 Main St., said Bridger Feuz, University of Wyoming Extension educator. Lunch is served each day if participants RSVP before 9 a.m. Jan. 22.

This is the second year for the program.

“The workshops are full of powerful presenters and timely and relevant topics,” said Feuz.

Day 1 topics include irrigation of forages, why grow relationships with the next generation, cattle market outlook, raising backyard chickens, rancher rules of thumb, backyard livestock production, winter livestock feeding and irrigated alfalfa variety performance.

Day 2 topics are weed identification and control, sage grouse and grazing, quantifying deworming in Wyoming sheep, litigation between the Western Watersheds Project and federal land management agencies, landscape-based riparian grazing, beekeeping 101, modern meat cuts (hands-on demonstration) and a question-and-answer session about meat and meat cutting.

Feuz said Cat Urbigkit, co-owner and editor of The Shepherd magazine, will speak about guardian dog use in large carnivore country during her keynote during lunch Tuesday. Urbigkit owns a western Wyoming sheep and cattle ranch. Feuz said she raises working livestock guardian dogs and travels the globe learning about guardian dog use in large carnivore country.

“People can come for the whole time on both days or pick and choose individual topics they wish to attend,” said Feuz.

Wyoming-Utah Ag Days include livestock, resource management sessions

Two days of workshops ranging from livestock and land resource management to worker protection standards are Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 25-26, in Evanston.

University of Wyoming Extension and Utah State University Extension are collaborating for Wyoming/Utah Ag Days at the historic Evanston Roundhouse, said Bridger Feuz, UW Extension educator based in Uinta County.

“It’s a great program for producers in western Wyoming and northern Utah,” he said.

Wednesday sessions include Wyoming ranch tools, managing beef cows, improved irrigated pastures, soil health, grazing as a fuel reduction tool, sagebrush treatments for livestock and sage-grouse and a cattle market outlook by Feuz during lunch. Feuz specializes in livestock marketing.

Thursday’s additional sessions include worker protection standards, ranch horse care, evaluating farm/ranch financial health, biosecurity at horse shows, veterinary feed directive and a lunchtime sheep market outlook by Feuz.
