An agricultural economist known for his research on international trade issues pertaining to the food industry is speaking at the University of Wyoming Friday, April 21.
Professor Ian Sheldon will discuss his paper “Eco-labeling and the gains from agricultural and food trade: A Ricardian Approach” at 3:30 p.m. in Room 137 in the Agriculture Building, said Mariah Ehmke, associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.
Sheldon is the Andersons Chair of Agricultural Marketing, Trade, and Policy in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics at The Ohio State University.
His talk offers insights into approaches to valuing the effect of international trade on the environment and environmental valuation in international trade, said Ehmke.
“Some of the concerns people have regarding globalization and trade arise because people are concerned about possible detrimental environmental outcomes,” she said. “Sheldon’s research offers possible approaches to incorporate environmental values, especially for agricultural areas, into internationally traded food products.”
The U.S. strategy on international trade is undergoing change, Ehmke noted.
“The new presidential administration has signaled a shift away from multilateralism toward bilateralism and more protectionist measures,” she said. “It is a good time to have a speaker with Sheldon’s knowledge and understanding of agricultural trade around to help disentangle what these changes may mean for Wyoming agriculture.”
