61th Annual National Land and Range Judging Contest

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Converse County 4-H Range Judging Team takes 1st in the Nation

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK---The Converse County 4-H Range Judging Team placed 1st at the 61th Annual National Land and Range Judging Contest held in Oklahoma City, OK.  Members of the team were Jessica Grant and Dusty Horn of Glenrock, and Devlyn Green and Morgan Hays of Douglas.  The team was coached by Tim Bixby of Preston, CT and Misty Hays of Douglas. Placing as individuals were Dusty in 1st place, Morgan in 2nd place, Jessica in 5th place, and Devlyn in 10th place.

The 4-Her’s tested their individual and team skills against other land and range judging teams from 38 other states across the nation.  The contest included identifying range plants and evaluating range ecological sites for suitability for livestock and wildlife uses.  The contest was the finalization of the week including practice range sites and intensive study of range plants.

The goal of the contest is to reinforce skills needed to manage rangeland for a variety of uses.  “The team worked really hard and realized the rewards for their hard work,” said Coach Hays. “It was a really tough contest this year,” added Hays. The team was selected to represent Wyoming at the Wyoming Resource Education Days (WYRED) in Casper, WY June 24, 2011.
